Governments around the world are working to help banks start lending money again to prevent an international recession*1. France, Germany, Spain and Austria have promised more than one trillion*2 dollars to buy part ownership in some banks and guarantee some loans. These and other governments are trying to get financial companies*3 to lend again to restart credit markets*4. Stock*5 prices increased in most markets following the news. Those in the United States increased by about eleven percent. In Hong Kong and Europe, they rose between eight and twelve percent.
